There's an interesting article in the New York Times titled 'Easy on the Adverbs, Exclamation Points and Especially Hooptedoodle'.
It's similar to what Iona has told us.
We're a group of writers in various genres and of varying experience who meet together in Kelso to help people to improve their writing skills and to help people begin writing fiction and to reduce social isolation. The low cost workshops have a focus primarily on talks, 'open mic' sessions and short stories. If you haven’t attended one of our workshops before, it’s free of charge. You're welcome to come and just listen. We are a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation no SC049640.

Session 5: Dialogue in Fiction Writing
Workshop: Tuesday 3rd December 2.30 pm – 4.30 pm at the Abbey Row Community Centre, Kelso. Downstairs in the Computer Room. £2 for the session to Peter.
This is the last session before the Christmas/New Year break.
The plan for Session 5 is to look at the ways the fiction writer uses dialogue to introduce and develop character, explore relationships and break up long paragraphs. It also provides an opportunity to use common idioms. We will discover ways to develop a writer’s ear to transform dialogue from actual speech to carefully crafted words.
There will be an opportunity to read our own work at this session.
Look forward to meeting up on Tuesday.
